October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a good time (as is any other time) to be thinking about your breast health, and to raise awareness. Getting screened is important, and many places offer free or low-cost exams. Here are a few facts regarding early detection from the American Cancer Society:
- Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40
- Clinical Breast Exams (CBEs) are recommended every three years for women in their 20s and 30s, and every year for women over 40
- You should know how your breasts normally look and feel and immediately report any change to your health care provider. Breast Self Examinations (BSEs) should start in your 20s
Remember, many women survive breast cancer because of early detection efforts. Take good care of yourself, and share this information if you will.
